Ju war letzens in Berlin zur Berlin Dub Wires Session mit Reggabus Soundsystem und Lions Den Soundsystem. Seine Eindrücke und ein Interview mit Organisator Vale findet ihr im Beitrag.
Anfang Februar, genauer am 09.02. fand die erste Berlin Dub Wires in der Schinckelschen Bauakademie statt. Und was für ne Session das war! Auch wenn es jetzt schon ein paar Wochen her ist, seit ich diese paar Zeilen schreibe (Asche auf mein Haupt!) habe ich immer noch ein lebendiges Bild vom Abend in meinem Kopf. Ich glaube, das alleine spricht schon für den Abend. Schon beim ersten Betreten der Location hatte ich das Gefühl, dass Soundsysteme und die Bauakademie sehr gut zusammenpassen.
Und ja, egal wann man wo hingeschaut hat, überall nur glückliche Menschen, die sich im Bass wiegten und skankten.
Doch nicht nur daran hat man die positive Stimmung gespürt. Bereits vor dem Beginn konnte man der Crew und allen Beteiligten förmlich die freudige Erwartung anmerken. So muss das.
Unterstrichen wurde dieses Gefühl von den Artists und Performern, die mit ihren Selections stets für die richtigen Vibes gesorgt haben. Dubplate galore!
Lion‘s Den hatte als Berliner Sound ja quasi ein Heimspiel und die beiden MCs KaliGreen und KonTa waren jedes Mal, wenn ich sie performen gehört habe, besser als das letzte Mal. Immer ein dickes Grinsen im Gesicht und immer konzentriert bei der Sache. Da sieht man, dass es Spaß macht und das steckt an. Der Auftritt von Saralène hat mich dann einfach mal dezent von den Socken gehauen. Ich hab sie schon lange nicht mehr live gehört. An den Produktionen auf denen sie vertreten ist, kann man ihre Qualität natürlich gut hören, aber live war das noch mal ein besonderer Ohrenschmaus.
Auch die Gäste aus Belgien haben sich in mein Herz gespielt. Eine tolle Selection von Sound Originator Franck mit einer souveränen Performance von Mad Codiouf am Mic, der auch immer wieder die Brücke zu Lion’s Den geschlagen hat und fast schon spielerisch die Interaktion vorangetrieben hat. So macht‘s Spaß.
Der Sound war wie zu erwarten geprägt von Stepper Rhythmen und einem Sound, dem man die Nähe zur französischen Szene anmerkt (kein Wunder bei der geographischen und sprachlichen Nähe zwischen Belgien und Frankreich).
Aber was erzähl ich. Schaut euch am besten den Aftermovie an. Der fasst den Abend sehr gut zusammen.
Die nächste Session in der Bauakademie wurden bereits angekündigt und die Jungs holen niemand anderes als King Shiloh Soundsystem nach Berlin. Alle weiteren Infos findet ihr am Besten im Facebook Event.
Zu guter Letzt habe ich mich noch kurz mit dem Initiator Vale ein bisschen unterhalten und das Ganze hier für euch zusammengefasst:
Ju: Could you give a short introduction to yourself?
Vale: I am a Berlin based Trumpet Player, Sound engineer, producer, and event organizer trying to promote awareness and education about Soundsystem culture.
With the trumpet I play a fusion between various classic styles on top of reggae and Dub productions
J: What was first, the love for reggae, soundsystem or the trumpet?
V: Trumpet was first, reggae and Dub second but I really got passionate about the music and its roots though Soundsystem culture
J: How long have you been playing the trumpet? What musical direction did you start with?
V: I started playing trumpet at the age of 7.
My parents were successful opera singers and pushed me towards a classical music education before I started to develop my own style – a mixture of classic, jazz, Latin and other influences.
J: When did you start to play to dub/reggae?
V: At the age of 20, After a strong influencial phase of old school jungle, dubstep and other UK type music.
J: How did the idea for Berlin Dub Wires come up and what’s the concept behind it? (if there is one, sometimes parties are just parties and that’s also fine ^^)
V: When Giacomo (producer at D-operation Drop and Nothing is Real) and I first met in Berlin in the beginning of 2016, we both agreed that there wasn’t enough proper sound system culture events happening in Berlin. Together we decided that if we’d get the chance to spread the positive energy that we had experienced from these dances we wouldn’t hesitate to start our own project and conceptualize it.
Soundsystem culture events are only possible when sound crews or families reach out to others. This interconnectivity between equipment (wires), people and the music is crucial and strongly underlines our message.
Therefore the name ‚Berlin Dub Wires‘
J: How did you come across the Bauakademie as venue for a sound system night?
V: Without the right venue it was impossible to create a new concept and most of clubs in Berlin don’t give you the option to bring such large sound systems into their space. We were searching for almost 1,5 years until stumbling across the Bauakademie in the heart of Berlin through a job as sound technician.
We instantly saw the huge potential of this historic building to be used for our purpose: creating a unique place for sound system culture gatherings where everybody involved was there to enjoy and work for the music as a whole.
A very special atmosphere is created when every person in the room is there for the same reasons..
J: You’re also part of the italy-based collective D-Operation Drop now. How did you meet? How did this come together? And what are your plans together in the future?
V: I’m a very close friend but not actually integrated in the D-operation Drop crew.
I had already bought some of their previous releases, when a common friend introduced me to Giacomo. Since then we always kept a close eye on each other’s music and tried to realise as many projects together as possible.
J: I think the first vinyl release you’re featured on is Trident alongside D-Operation Drop (at least to my knowledge). Are there any releases/collabs/ planned in the future?
V: Yes, Trident is the first 12″ record release featuring my trumpet. We made at least 4 other collabs together that we play as dubplates for now without further Infos on release at this point.
